Cheesesteak Sandwiches

A sandwich is a always a good choice for lunch or dinner. Cheesesteaks are a personal favorite of many. However, my recipe is very easy to prepare at home on your own.

How to prepare a cheesesteak sandwich

M version of a cheesesteak sandwich is fairly easy to prepare. It’s only made with steak, onions, bell peppers and provolone cheese on a hoagie roll. Also, it isn’t time consuming.

It is important to purchase the most fresh hoagie rolls you can find. I like to get mine from the bakery at my local grocery store. If you can’t find them in the bakery section, then Arnold’s is a great brand as well.

For this recipe, I only use onions and bell peppers as veggies, but mushrooms are very good on them also. If you’re going to use mushrooms, sauté them along with your onions and bell peppers.

When it comes to the steak, I recommend purchasing pre-shaved or pre-sliced steak. If you can’t find it at your local grocery store, it’s important to slice your steak into thin pieces. I honestly don’t know too many people that like large pieces of meat on their cheesesteak sandwich. However, if you are one those people that do, feel free to make your pieces larger. Also, another great tip is place meat in freezer for about 30 minutes prior to slicing. This will make the slicing process a lot easier. Although, it’s not required, it’s helpful.

The provolone cheese is what sets this sandwich off. It melts very well, and has a smoked flavor to it. However, mozzarella is also a great choice of cheese for this sandwich, or any steak sandwich. I also use shredded white cheddar cheese. I add the shredded white cheddar after cooking the meat.

Mayo is delicious on the sandwich and/or a little mustard. If you’re not a fan neither, then use whatever condiments you like. Also some great side options are fries or chips.

  • 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 cup shredded white cheddar
  • 6-8 slices of provolone

Instructions

  • Slice steak into thin, small pieces, if didn't purchase pre-shaved or sliced meat.
  • Heat olive oil and 2 tbsp. butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and peppers and sauté for 5 minutes, or until tender. Remove and set aside.
  • To same skillet, add the steak. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and Worcestershire sauce. Sauté and cook steak for 5 minutes, or until no visible pink. Stir in shredded white cheddar until melted.
  • Stir in cooked veggies, and layer with provolone slices until all meat is covered. Turn off heat and cover while you toast hoagie rolls. The heat will melt cheese slices.
  • Over medium heat, add 1 tbsp. of butter to a skillet. Slice hoagie rolls halfway through. Toast rolls on each side to liking.
  • Assemble sandwiches by adding condiments of choice, along with meat, veggie and cheese mixture. Serve immediately.

Notes

Prior to slicing meat, place it in freezer for  30 minutes.  This will make the meat firm, which will make it easier to slice.
